Michael Gove as Education Secretary has taken education back to the dark ages, putting huge unnecessary pressures on young people and reducing access for those who struggle with mainstream education. He is a poor choice as a speaker for a college already accused of elitism.

Hearing the first bars of the Ode to Joy at speech day 2016 moved me to tears. I was deeply impressed by the Headmaster’s passion and courage in taking such a clear position that the values that lay behind the Brexit vote were not those of the College. Inviting Michael Gove to Speech Day belies all of that. A deeply divisive figure, Gove as Education Secretary undid years of progress in education and led a Brexit campaign that fuelled fear and prejudice and will result in lasting damage to our country. I don’t believe in no-platforming. By all means invite Gove to a debate, where there is an opportunity to challenge him, but not as a guest of honour. I will not attend, and will discourage my son from going - unless he promises to show his opposition and organises other pupils to do the same. That would be what the headmaster who spoke in 2016 would want him to do.

Mr Gove has more than enough platforms already for his views, plus there are so many other better and more suitable speakers who could have been invited.

If Gove is speaking, we won't be attending. Our reasons echo all those stated by other families on this petition. My husband and I won't be going, neither will either set of grandparents. Our child's two godparents had also expressed an interest in coming, but were so disgusted by the choice of speaker, that they changed their minds. So that's eight educated adults who won't be coming. First time we will have missed it in ten years. Shameful.

Hypocrisy and disingenuity aren’t among the values that I would expect Brighton College to condone. As such I’d have expected a better choice of speaker.

I suspect a lot of seats will be empty , an uninspired choice of speaker . I do not believe at such an influential time in their learning,the pupils should be forced to listen to a politician whose words are shallow and ill informed.

Anyone with this man’s record of lies, deceit, and disdain of excellence does not have any right to a forum at an educational establishment of any kind, let alone at one with the standards and ethos of Brighton College.

Extremely surprised of this decision to invite Gove by the College - undermined our trusts in the values that the College holds.
