Google, get my name right.
What is Dokdo?
Dokdois a small group of islands just off the east coast of South Korea. Its existence and occupancy has been well established as far back as the sixth century. Even to this day,Dokdois cared forand maintained by the South Korean government and is home to more than 40 South Korean nationals who tend to the island, as well as its structures.
Where did the dispute come from?
During the Japanese occupation of Korea at the turn of the 20thcentury, all land controlled by Korea was claimed by the government of Japan. At the conclusion of World War II, all land originally belonging to Korea was returned. Japan claims, however, thatDokdowas originally aterritory of Japan prior to the occupation. To this day,Dokdois considered to be a South Koreanterritory by the majority of governments in the asia pacific region, including China.
What are Liancourt Rocks? I don’t see Dokdo on the map.
If you search forDokdoon Google Maps, you will see the twin islands correctly located in the East Sea. What you won’t find is the nameDokdoanywhere on the map. Instead they will be labelled asLiancourt Rocks, the title to the islands given by European sailors in the 19thcentury.
Prior to 2012,Dokdowas its name on Google Maps, reflecting the name accepted by the international community. Google changed the name toLiancourt Rocksafter a Japanese emissary convincedGoogle that the sovereignty of the island is contested.
Why is this important?
By removing theDokdoname for a neutral name, Google is telling the world that the island’s ownershipis contested. By trying to stay neutral, Google is actually taking a position. We are not asking Google to take a position. What we are asking from Google is to respect the history and accuracy of the maps of the world. We are asking for Google to understand the complete picture, instead of acting based on one group’s request. We are asking for Google to give our name back to us.
