Odd how my comments keep being erased. This child will pass on genes from both parents' side, so arguing that he should also carry a certain name just to honour the ancestors on one side is ludicrous. The child already does quite enough carrying all the inherited diseases in both families. Not to mention the fact that he/she carries the father's surname. In Spanish-speaking countries, the wife keeps her name and the child takes both surnames. That's more than fair. Would this father agree to that just because that's the custom, if he were Spanish? I doubt it. In China, the child decides what surname to use.
In this case, the father already got to choose the surname and the Godparents for this child. How about he starts showing his wife and future mother of his child some consideration and respect? After all, what's the point of having all first-born boys in a generation (all boy cousins!) named exactly the same? Maybe if mother-in-laws and father-in-laws started showing their in-laws and grand-children some respect, that would put an end to this foolish, archaic custom.

as a lone single sterile man i feel that anyone should be able TO name their children whatever they want thats what i did with my adopted child bonquayquay

Spyridon is a sexy name. it took about a week to grow on me and now I seem to be hearing the name everywhere. I think its a sign. Good luck!
