It is a respected tradition to name a child after the grandparents. Although the name may be different by today's standards, think of how proud he will be knowing his grandfather is still in his life years from now.
As for the girl's name, excellent!

I love it & I'm not Greek or have a "Greek-ear"
I think it's an awesome, unique, & beautiful name. In 2days world w/names like Apple, West, Blue, CoCo where they r accepted by most. Y would u not want one w/ tradition plus uniqueness? Plus u have the options of Spy or Spyro for nicknames!!!! LOVE THEM! Btw Michael is a great American name but WAY to common. Ur some will have at least 2-3 others n each clAss w his name.
I like Spyridon Micheal!!! I think it's awesome name & will mean a lot to all involved!!

Well she married into someone who was Greek. If you don't want to follow their traditions, don't marry into them. >.< Hate to sound rude, but that's how I see it.

Kseniya, I married a Greek man over 25 years ago (I am a Portuguese & Norwegian American) There are a few traditions which are extremely important to the Greek culture, names is one of them. I am sure you have strong heart felt reasons to prefer Michael for your choice. However you NEED to consider your new family and how you are positioning yourself (you may win a battle to lose a war; loss of respect) Also have you considered that your son has inherited the 'right' to be named after his Papu? (Think how it will be- later on- when one can child can say I am named after Papu, or Yiayia, and your name means what?) I questioned using the name George- 20 yrs ago it was very out of fashion.....think 'George of the Jungle' and try not to laugh....but I love my now 19 yr. old's name, and my deceased father-in-law's name lives on! I understand how you feel...but honestly consider how hollow the name Michael is (Who is it meant for?) and exactly how important names are to your new families culture.

Kids can be the meanest little creatures on earth. I have an un-popular 1st name (Phyllis), and I was teased all the way through Junior High about my name. They called me Phyllis Diller mostly. It hurt my feelings, and made me withdrawn & shy. I HATED it. I still don't care for my name, but I deal with it. I have been a substitute teacher for many yrs., and I can tell you from first-hand accounts-the kids with the "different" names get teased the most, and they DO suffer because of it. I JUST WENT THROUGH THIS *EXACT* ARGUMENT WITH MY 3RD SON. MICHAEL IS TOO COMMON A NAME. LET IT BE A MIDDLE NAME. Go with your husband's decision! You have more say in the next child's name. Also, don't always let the oldest kids get the most favored names! It's not fair to the younger ones. Pick your favorite names out of a hat if you have to!
-Obviously, I'm not the oldest child--& neither was my husband. I wish you well.

I was born in 1958. My mother named me Phyllis. I was teased & harassed unmercily by my fellow students about my name. They mostly called me Phyllis Diller, the famous female comedienne at that time. I love my Mom dearly, but NEVER appreciated the name she gave me, and to this day, there still aren't alot of women named Phyllis. If I could have changed it decades ago, I would have. I always longed for a pretty, common girl's name. Please don't name your boy Spyridon. Save that for his middle name, or something. If he LIVES in America give him an American name. If he lives in Greece, by all means, give him a Greek name. Please consider seriously my experience. I hope it helps.
