what kind of custom is that?? italians do it the same way, my family broke the tradtition. letting her name all other kids or 2nd ones being named after her family is DISRESPECTFUL!!! what is more important, is that she doesn't have to say a name 100 times a day she does not want. think it through.

Ok, I'll give my humble opinion. Spiridon is a beautiful Greek name. But, you must admit it is not a common name in the U.S. You have to think of the child. Honestly, think what he will feel in school. I believe that if he is to go to school in the U.S., he will be teased with this name. I visited Corfu years ago and was there during the feast of St. Spiridon. I also saw his preserved head in a church! Would you think this is something that will have meaning to him in the future? Are you going to raise him in the Greek Orthodox Church? These are things to consider. And as to Michael, it is a very common name. My son is Michael, but actually has a combined name - two names in Spanish. The combination is good, rather than just one name. You should really compromise and perhaps choose a totally different name to the one you have each thought of. I now have a grandson, and when his parents chose a name, they made sure that it sounded good in English, Spanish, French and Hebrew - and this is because we have family in all these countries and want him to feel comfortable everywhere. Something to think about.

I work at a middle school and see the horrifying effects that children go thru when they have a messed up name such as this one.....children with odd names get teased, bullied, ridiculed, etc.....in turn they turn super introvert, barely speaking to anyone because they are trying to be invisible avoiding all the clowning that takes place.....PLEASE, do not do this to your child.....Michael is my vote. :-)

Father's choice all the way on this one. His argument is more cogent. & amusing. & the name is wonderful. Spyridon! Spir-ry-don. Beautiful! If you'd rather he not be associated by nickname with the dastardly Spiro Agnew (ugh) he could be called Ridon. Sounds like a romantic hero! (& apologies to all the Michael's in the world- personally, I've never known one who wasn't a high-maintenance drama king.) ;) From a feminist to Mrs. Soukeras: please honour your beautiful husband with this gift! Sincerely, Aisling (unusual names are a marvelous gift to a child!)

Dear Nicholas, you are a jerk to dismiss your wife's opinion about naming HER (as well as your) baby and to make such a private matter public... She is not a baby producing machine and her opinion should count (I hope you guys are a real family and not a housemaid-with-sex-services-type of relationship). Second, to publicly mock the names from her home country is rude and disrespectful to her culture. Just think how you'd feel if she made jokes about Greek names. By the way, the reason she does not like Spyridon is because it used to be popular in Russian peasantry in the previous centuries, so she has negative associations with it. And she will have to use that name dozens of times each day calling her dear child something she dislikes. Most of all, it should have been decided between you two, and should not have been made a matter of public discussion.

Spyridon is cool. Now of days kids have the craziest names. Girls have boys names, boys have themed names, kids are named after family pets, countries, companies, or cars, etc. I wanted to name my sons (only wanted sons) Journey, Maverick, Parrish, and Griffin. But because my husband family naming traditions my 3 boys have first and middle names from our family tree.... James Thomas, Charles Timothy, and Anthony Philip. I am happy with the family names because I like to teach my kids about respect for all those who came before us. My middle son wants to be and enginneer like my dad Timothy. Spyridon has great nick names...Spy, rid, py, ridon, and hey you! If the kid doesn't like his name he can pick a nickname or go by his middle name, maybe Michael.

Sorry, I do not agree with this for the archaic reasons provided. Speaking as a non-Greek woman married to a Greek man, you knew what you were getting yourself into when you, Nicholas, married your wife. You can't expect her to go by your traditions. I certainly didn't abide by this when naming our child - and this was a topic of discussion BEFORE we were married. Find a name you'll both like. And yes, my husband tried the excuse of "Greeks are the best, creators of democracy, the Olympics.."etc, etc. Doesn't fly in a marriage.

I think you should go with Spyridon Michael. The name has personal significance and a sense of history for you. While Michael is a beautiful name, Spyridon is meaningful and unique, which is much more important. I "gave in" and named my son an "American" name and put the Greek name second. I very much regret it now! As far as "choosing to change it when he is older" as Mijsa suggested, let's be real, very few people are going to change their name. Once you have your name, it sticks!

My name is unusually spelled, ok maybe I couldn't find anything w my name on it. But I was named for my moms best friend. Being named after a beloved grandfather in the Greek tradition is heartwarming. I hope you do it Nick! And new mama in the us we love unusual names!!

Michael Spyridon Soukeras is definitely the best way to go.....he can choose when he is older which name to use and you are both happy....he does after all have your family's last name already too.Thereby already honoring your family heritage. Honor your wife's family heritage by giving your wife's and your child a first name after her family. Otherwise, you simply appear to be an egomaniac, jerk who thinks only his family's heritage matters.

I hated my name as a child. My Italian mother wanted to name me Jennifer. My Greek father wanted me to be named after his mother Eleni. I am so grateful now to have my ethnic name. Besides, no one is going to call the baby Spyridon. Spiro is a totally cool name! There are enough Michaels in the world.

Get over it nick. Time to start a new tradition. Great way to start a new family. Give the boy a name his mother hates is not the way to have ahappy family. Spiro agnew a crook. Putin a dictator not very good examples of cultural names. Giving him a strange name he will end up hating you. Give him the choice when he gets older you may get your wish just remember he maybe deciding who cares for you in your old age.

Hi Mr. Soukeras! I assure you that more than half million Greeks that I probably saw during my numerous trips to Greek islands would support your beautiful decision to name your boy with this beautifull name. Also that's the name of the famous saint Spiridon from Kerkyra, Korfu who is well known around the world for his spiritual hard work. Use the internet and tell your wife about this, the story of Spiridon would surely inspire her. So, +500,000 to the petition, I guarantee those people want it, my responsibility. Just add this up to the result you will get here and tell your wife my best wishes and good luck in naming your next child! :)

I was surprised to see this on Facebook today in a news post, my father's name was Spyridon. Many times I have wished I had been able to have a son who I could pass the name to. I loved the idea that sharing the name was more than just tradition but a way to honor my father who isn't alive anymore, but also signify the bond our family has, it's history and legacy.. Besides who doesn't love Spiro as a nickname? You can't get more masculine than that. It's practically Gold. Besides, There are a million Michael's in this world... And frankly you only get one shot at a cool name. The world needs more Spyridon's!!!

Although the name might be a family tradition ; think of your son's future life . Some names invite trouble and bullying . This would be one of those names. Like pinning a kick me sign on his back at birth .
