Any child should cherish the roots and traditions of his parents, and a name that has its roots in a word (σπυρίδες) meaning abundance in Ancient Greek is going a long way in honoring one's routes and traditions.

I love unique names with a background story. My daughters name is Kanyan, (like the Grand Canyon). My husband picked it and at first I was unsure. But 11 years later I'm so glad we choose Kanyan. It fits her perfectly. Good luck I hope your wife has a change of heart.

This shouldnt even be an argument. Nicholas father name is Spiro which therefore should be the name of their first born son. Just grow some balls and tell the mrs thats how it is.

It is also the name of my great grandfather. It's a powerful name and to merry a Greek is also to respect the culture.

As a woman, I totally agree that you should have the privilege of naming your son after your father. Though "Misha " as in actor Dmitri Tippens Krushnic's stage name, I think is a reasonable suggestion for a second son.

The name has a personal connection to the baby's father and his family/cultural traditions, that's a very good reason to choose the Greek name over 'Michael', and it's a much more unique name- the child will love it and carry the family name on proudly :)

I like the idea of history and heritage. And it means so much to dad and grandfather. This was said prior to marriage. I agree it is old fashioned. But it good strong name with a history. And I was named for my grandmother. (Her maiden name is my first name) and I enjoy knowing that.

If Americans are mature enough to elect a president named "Barak", I don't see what the fuss is about naming a child Spyridon. Spyridon is a noble Greek Orthodox name of a great Saint.
