Celiacs should have the same courtesy as all parishioners. God doesn’t discriminate because of any illness or medical conditions.

Something needs to be done for celiac patients.

I am celiac and you almost feel like like an outcast. Like you don’t matter. It’s your problem so YOU deal with it !

I am a very sensitive celiac and cannot tolerate any wheat without a severe reaction that will take a minimum of 3 months to heal from.

High proportions of Irish and of Italian people have coeliac disease. There is no actual reason that wheat is necessary for the communion bread to be "real" or "valid". It is the Holy Spirit who acts to bless it. It is true that for some sufferers the effects are not severe with a tiny piece of this wafer, but purposely excluding those who suffer the most is needlessly cruel and not aligned with the heart of the Father.

Bread comes in many forms, and there is no way to tell what form was used at the last supper. To unilaterally state that gluten must be part of whatever bread used then is poor historical food anthropology at the best and pure hubris at the worse.

4 members of my family have Celiacs, and are unable to receive the Body of Our Lord in Church.

As a Catholic and parent of a child, now an adult, who has suffered from Eosinaphilic Disorder (an allergic disease of the immune system) & Mast Cell Activation Disorder since birth I have prayed that someday my daughter would be able to experience full Communion when attending Mass. She no longer wants to go spend time with Jesus because she feels left out and shunned by many in our parish due to her disability and differences, and this breaks my heart as Mass has been the only place where she felt peace and calmness in her life. When preparing her for her sacraments it was difficult to explain to her why she couldn’t fully participate due to her intellectual disability and help her to understand how she needs to make a Spiritual Communion, which most neurotypical individuals also have a hard time understanding. For a short time she was able to receive the Blood of Christ in a separate chalice and before anyone else partook but then started having allergic reactions to even the small sip of “no sulfites” detected wine which had been transfigured in Christ’s blood that I had to purchase. Our parish priests no longer Bless those who come up for Communion, children and adults, who cannot physically partake of Christ’s body and blood which causes even more bad feelings for those who are already dealing with a life full of difficulties. Because of her personal experiences at church it has caused her to also believe that “God hates her”, although myself and the few in our parish who understand her often tell her that is not true and that He made her special to show others his true way of unconditional love and kindness. I remember a time when all who believed were welcome at the Eucharistic table and that has changed which makes me sad because My God is a loving father who accepts us all unconditionally and embraces our differences. I will continue to pray that someday we will all be able to share in the Holy Eucharist without restrictions.

I am not Caeliac, but my son is ! I too wonder if God would protect someone whose faith was so strong that they ignored warnings believing that what they receive in Communion IS NOT BREAD, but THE BODY OF CHRIST because of transubstantiation at the Offertory ???????

Children of God and practicing Catholics should be able to participate in the Act of Communion. Celiac Catholics cannot partake in Holy Communion as they cannot ingest gluten. A non-gluten host should be available for celiac Catholics. It is actually quite cruel to leave them out of participating in their beliefs because of serious health reasons. As grape juice is provided to those who cannot drink wine, GF hosts should be provided for those who cannot ingest gluten.

9 year old son with celiac...his doctor has advised him to not take the low gluten wafers and I stand beside this for many reasons. I am saddened that he cannot participate fully in Communion and I appreciate you creating this petition.

Everyone who wants to receive the Eucharist should be allowed to do so safely. I don't think Jesus would exclude anyone as His guest.

As someone with non-celiac gluten sensitivity, I feel excluded from fully participating in Mass due to my health condition. I hope that the Catholic Church will allow gluten-free hosts.
