Burying Democracy: How Judge Zulu and HH Are Undermining Zambia’s Political Order. By Isaac Mulezuma Njobvu Saturday, 30.08.2025 In a disturbing twist for Zambia’s democracy, the judiciary, meant to be the last line of defense against political manipulation, has now become the instrument of destruction. At the center of this storm is Judge Conceptor Chinyanuwa Zulu (Mrs), whose deliberate inaction is enabling what may go down as the most calculated political sabotage in our multiparty era. In October 2023, President Hakainde Hichilema (HH), in what now appears to be a long-game strategy, sponsored a parallel and illegal PF convention, placing Miles Sampa at the helm of a splintered Patriotic Front (PF). When their alliance collapsed, HH swiftly replaced Sampa with Robert Chabinga, a loyalist with little legitimacy among the PF grassroots. But as time has passed, Sampa has made peace with the bona fide PF leadership and now seeks to restore legitimacy by handing power back to the rightful custodians of the party. A Consent Judgment, the legal instrument of reconciliation between both PF factions, was filed and agreed upon by all parties. The only thing missing? Judge Zulu’s signature. And that’s where the rot lies. Since April, 2025, this simple act of signing and sealing a court order has been deliberately delayed. In any other case, such a straightforward procedural step would take days. The Chief Justice’s own directive insists on judgments being concluded within two months, even in complex matters. So why the silence here? The answer is chilling: political interference. Sources within both the judiciary and State House, very credible individuals with first-hand knowledge, have confirmed that Judge Zulu was directly instructed by the Executive not to endorse the judgment. It is abuse of office for the Judge to refuse to sign the consent that both parties have agreed to, this is injustice and an injury to our democracy. The judge needs to be compelled to do the right thing.
