The Girl Scout mission is to build girls of courage, confidence and character, who make the world a better place. The way they do this is by empowering girls to have their kind of fun, build friendships, and understand the power of girls together. Girl Scouting helps girls develop their full individual potential by relating to others with increasing understanding, skill, and respect; developing values to guide their actions and provide the foundation for sound decision-making; and contributing to the improvement of society through their abilities, leadership skills, and cooperation with others.
We have a troop of 10 girls in Roswell, Georgia. These girls have been together for 10 years and we are very proud to say that these girls have succeeded in planning, budgeting and creating adventures hundreds of other girls, older and younger over the last 5 years to fund raise for other excursions.
This
troop has funded 100% of their trips taken to Savannah and an adventure
up the East Coast to visit Washington, DC, Colonial Williamsburg and
Virginia Beach. The girls of Troop 25334 are now planning a 100% self
funded trip to Rome, Italy and Athens, Greece in the summer of 2015 for
10 days. Self funded means asking for $0 from the parents. It means
that 100% of the troop will be able to attend, no matter the families
financial abilities.
The primary way this troop raises money
is by planning, hosting and running camps for other girls. At these
camps, each member of Troop 25334 will plan classes to teach each of the
other troops along with extra activities outside of the classes. The
classes range from jewelry making, art classes, outdoor cooking skills,
fire safety, and many other traditional and non-traditional Girl Scout
skills.
We are asking for you to sign
this petition because our Council has changed the policy to no longer
allow troops like ours to request camp space outside of the traditional
troop requesting time period. Because of this, our attendance has
dropped tremendously. We are only allowed to request space on Dec 1 for
Spring camps and April 1 for Fall camps. By the time we get a response
on whether or not we even get space and where it is,
it is too late to invite people to attend because they have already
planned their events for the Spring or Fall. The only option we have
been given is to register as a Camporee which would cost us about $75
per girl. We currently charge maximum $65 per girl so we would lose
money having the camps.
Please support us and all troops in our Council by signing our petition directed at our Council to ask them to reconsider this policy change.

I have been so busy lately organizing logistics for our next camp that I barely have time to check my email but the feedback from the other troops has been honestly overwhelming. It is wild to see how far these girls have come since we started and seeing them handle the budgeting for Italy is just a reminder of why we did this in the first place.

I honestly had no clue this would balloon like it has and it is just so wild to see people actually caring about what these girls are building. It makes the logistics of planning these trips feel so much more worth it because knowing there are folks backing us up is honestly the best fuel for the fire even when the emails get really overwhelming.

The girl-led camp events are the ones the little girls like the most. Council needs to understand what a fabulous retention "tool" our older girls are. This is exactly the sort of thing that drives me crazy about council. I wish someone down there had some common sense.
I am a member of troop 25334 and I am so proud of the work we have done on all of our campouts, and in raising all of the money to go on our trips. I think it is really important that we learn these kinds of skills and are able to interact with younger girls to teach them the things they could do in girls scouts. I hope these rules are changed so we and the other girl scouts can continue to have this great camp experience.
This Council policy change directly hurts the people they are trying to serve, the girls. Some of the best camps my younger scouts have attended have been led by older girl troops. I believe they should be allowed to continue this and learn how to raise money for something they want to do along the way (and not have mom and dad pay for it).
This change in policy seems to defeat the entire purpose of Girl Scouts. Here these girls are trying to meet the model GS has told them embodies the true spirit of scouting and it seems they are meeting with resistance every time they try to do something. I understand Council needs the funds from these camp sites to keep the sites running - which booking far in advance should not hurt. And also, that it's a very popular activity that always sells out, so the argument that if you book too far in advance could tempt the fates and lead to cancellations would again be moot as they are always sold out.
My daughter is in this troop and it would be a shame if the troop is not able to plan future camps as needed to finish their goals they are already working towards and want to finish!
How short-sighted of your Council to do somethign so self-serving and, well., amost dishonest! Is this how we show ouyr girls that we respect and trust the examples we have set and the training we have given them? I think NOT!
these girls should be permitted to "lead" their last camp experience and enjoy the rewards of their efforts as they have planned. I believe it selfish their Council would take this opportunity away from them int he 11th hour of their Girl Scout careers so that the Council may profit for themselves. To the Council Members - is that the lesson you want to teach future Leaders in our country and is that the message you want to pass on to perspective Girl Scouts. I challenge you to re-consider this policy change.

This is an amazing program, and that the council only severely limited it without obvious reason instead of outright banning it is terrible. The scouting program is already in trouble this generation, disallowing leadership on the part of the older scouts only drags it further away than it should be. From a Life Scout of BSA Troop 27, out of Little Rock, AR.
