We, the undersigned, respectfully petition Corners Community Center, Inc., the owners of the Community Corners shopping center in the Village of Cayuga Heights, to work towards bringing more food and coffee establishments to their shopping center. As the original developers of the shopping center stated in 1947, "In developing The Corners Community Center, its sponsors have insisted... the kind and caliber of its services must suit the basic family needs of the Community." There are too few businesses currently operating at Community Corners that have hours of operation and provide the products that residents need and want. This petition is designed to show the community's desire and support for such establishments at this location. We urge you to rent to more food and coffee establishments and bring Community Corners back to its original intent, as a community hub and gathering place for its residents. Thank you for your consideration of this request - we hope to see Community Corners continue to be operated along the same principles for which it was built over 60 years ago, "...for the use and convenience of the seven or eight hundred families already living in Cayuga Heights Village and in the areas directly north and east of the Village". And now in 2009, for the thousands of new residents of Cayuga Heights and nearby areas, that means renting to the kinds of food and coffee places that we need and want.

Community Corners in Ithaca, New York, is the only surviving center in Ithaca, outside of downtown, that was built as a walkable commercial space to accommodate daily retail and service needs for the residents of its neighborhood. www.friendsofthecorners.org documents its development in 1947 and its current state, and opens itself up for discussion about its future, as well as the creation of a sustainable community, generally.
