Gil Hodges was a man's man. He was a Marine who served meritoriously in WW2, he came home to a career with the fabulous Brooklyn Dodgers. He was a Golden Glove First Baseman, a dependable slugger,with great numbers. He was an integral part of a team that remained at the top of the National League throughout the Golden Era of Baseball. Without his strong character and leadership the Dodgers would not have beaten their rivals, the New York Yankees. He retired and went on to manage the Washington Senators and the New York Mets. He led the Mets to a World Series win in 1969. When one of his players failed to hustle, Hodges calmly walked out on to the field and removed that player from the game. It was the absolute right thing to do. Today's players and coaches could learn much from Gil Hodges, a class act.
