I've heard that Ted Williams kept the Vets Committee from voting him in for decades, supposedly out of envy for Gil's doing much better as manager of the Senators than Ted did. So what's the holdup now?

Gil Hodges home run totals are comparable to three other firstbasemen who are already in the Hall of Fame; Hank Greenberg, Tony Perez, and Orlando Cepeda. (Perez hit 9 more HR's than Hodges. But, played 5 more seasons than Gil.) Gil had 7 consecutive seasons with 100 or more RBI's. None of the other 3 that I just mentioned did that. Hodghes was an 8 time All-Star, a 3 time Gold Glove winner, and a 2 time World Series Champion as a player. He has a World Series batting avertage of .267, with 5 HR's and 21 RBI's. As a manager, he led a NY Mets team with a .242 batting average to a World Series title, using a brilliant two-platoon system that produced more than 80 RB's from the firstbase position, and 99 RBI from the rightfield position. He has just as many World Series titles as a manager, as Whitey Herzog with FAR fewer post season appearances. (...and don't forget that the Mets had brilliant pitching in the early 70's. They most assuredly would have made it back to the post season with Gil at the helm, and very could have won another title under his direction. Gil's selection to the Hall of Fame is LONG OVERDUE. He dominated the 1950's as a frst baseman in the National League, and won a World Series as a manager. I also forgot to mention that Hodges is one of only 16 men in 145 years to hit 4 home runs in one game. Thsi man should have been elected to the Hall of Fame many, many years ago. His numbers are just as good as the other 3 firstbasemen I mentioned here, and they are all in the H.O.F. Please don't overlook him anymore. Please put this man and his legacy to baseball into his / its proper place. Please elect Gil Hodges to the Hall of Fame NOW!
