He convinced the plate umpire that one of his players had been hit by a low pitch by showing shoe polish on that ball. Everyone says it's the lifetime .240 batting average that's the problem. There's so much more to the man. Held the grand slam HR record with 14 till Willie McCovey broke it.

Gil Hodges’ career numbers clearly show he was a prominent first baseman of his era and that alone should be enough. Then you have to factor in his 1969 Miracle Mets. He turned the franchise completely around.
