"Gifted" Education in Seattle Public Schools
Within the Seattle Public Schools there are two programs for Advanced Learning. These are the HCC (formerly APP) Program, and the Spectrum Program. These programs are available to students that pass a test at kindergarten level and then are identified as advanced learners. Although it does create a more challenging and engaging environment for these qualifying students, it takes money from the other students learning. In my research I have also found that it leads to a less ethnically and economically diverse community within these programs. This is why I am calling for the removal of these programs.
