I agree that the programs are much less diverse culturally and economically. If you can't get rid of the programs, how can you change them to encourage a more diverse population? I do believe that "highly capable students" are considered "special ed" so they are required to get accommodations by the school district.
Hi Dave! I totally agree that this program should be changed to encourage a more diverse population. But the problem is that students are tested at ages 5 and 6 and normally their test scores correlate with the environment they were raised in rather than the way their brains are able to learn. My solution therefor is rather than have a program that is made specifically for "advanced learners", create a curriculum that will be adaptable to all students styles of learning. This way the money that had been going to the highly capable students would be benefitting all students rather than just those that are considered advanced. But I agree that it will be a hard change to initiate so it would be a good idea to find a better way to have a more diverse population in these programs. Thanks for putting in your ideas!
