The Parks Department has officially approved our proposal for the Greenwood Heights Dog Run. I am reflecting on the quiet persistence of this neighborhood as we move toward the next phase of site development and committee formation.

We, the residents of the area commonly known as Greenwood Heights and sometimes referred to as South Slope within the jurisdiction of Community Board 7 and bound to the North by 16th Street, to the South by 23rd Street, to the East by 3rd Ave and to the West by 8th Ave hereby request that the Parks Department of the City of New York and all other governing bodies, designate within the neighborhood, a fenced-in area for dogs and dog-owners to safely exercise without the use of leashes. This area which we will refer to as the "Greenwood Heights Dog Run" will comply with all of the rules for city dog runs set by the Parks Department of NYC. Furthermore, site selection will be based on recommendation by the community and the parks department. We believe the Greenwood Heights Dog Run (GHDR) will benefit all members of the community, not just dog owners. For dog owners, GHDR will provide a ticket free area where their dogs can get much needed daily exercise and interaction. The run will be close enough to their homes to be practical for daily use. The dog owners will be responsible for the cleaning and maintenance of the dog park and will form a committee to ensure guidelines are followed. A community liaison will be appointed to ensure the concerns of the neighborhood are addressed. For neighbors who do not own dogs and the parents of local children, GHDR will be located at a site which is currently not used by pedestrians or kids. It will be completely fenced in and away from areas where local children play. The existence of a dog run will negate any and all reasons for a dog owner to break the law by taking a dog off leash in our community parks. This will increase the safety of our parks for the community as a whole. Dog Run Rules Hours of operation dawn till dusk. Owners must clean up after their dogs. Dogs entering run must be licensed, fully immunized and free of any contagious conditions. Dogs in heat are not allowed in the run. Owners must stop their dogs from digging holes and must fill any that have been dug. Please discourage dogs from barking. Dogs are not to be left in run unattended. Dogs with aggressive tendencies should not be brought into the run. Dogs showing aggressiveness towards people or other dogs must be removed from the run immediately. For their safety, small children are not allowed in the run. No more than four dogs per person.

This would be great for the community. Keeps the dogs happy and the sidewalks less crowded.

I live right near 20th and there is literally no space for my dog to play. my neighbors would love this.
