Nuclear or radioactive waste production is a devastating issue that more people should be completely aware of because of the negative impacts it can have for humans and the environment, and it should be stopped at once. First off, the nuclear power generating the waste is expensive, running at $4000/kW for the construction, meaning that a 1 GW power plant costs about $4 billion to build. The money that is used to run and construct these nuclear power plants is not worth it, and it should be invested instead in renewable energy sources because renewable energy sources produce no waste in contrast to the nuclear power plants that produce a lot of waste. Furthermore, there is a risk of an accident that could have harmful lasting effects on people. While the risks of these accidents are low, the effects from one accident could last for many years. An example of a major nuclear accident was the Chernobyl disaster. The Chernobyl disaster occurred on April 26, 1986 at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine. It was caused by a steam explosion occurred which released radiation into the air and the surrounding area. Results were 30 people died in the accident, 7 million people near the plant were affected by the radiation and repairs cost billions of dollars. This clearly proves another reason why nuclear power plants should be banned when the amount of damage economically, socially and environmentally from the accident is considered. Finally, nuclear waste, if not disposed properly, can damage the environment, ruining air, water and soil quality. The planet's water cycle is the main way radiation gets spread through the environment. The radiation in the water cycle is mainly spread through drinking the water or breathing air containing radiation. This evidence shows the harmful effects in the environment that are caused by nuclear waste disposed improperly and what kind of health problems it can cause for humans. This evidence suggests that nuclear waste production needs to be banned because everything in the environment is connected through the water cycle so if the radiation leaks into water, the radiation can spread anywhere to any living thing. Therefore, from these reasons, one can see why nuclear waste needs to be banned, considering how radioactive waste affects humans and the environment in many negative ways, which more people should be learning about to develop a better understanding of this issue.
