Rubrics as an educational tool have increased in popularity. Once upon a time, rubrics were nonexistent. This petition is an attempt for the students of Stony Brook University to express how they feel about the implementation of rubrics in their classes to the faculty of SBU.

We (the students of SBU) feel that rubrics are a disadvantage to our education. They restrict the individual's ability to pursue his style of learning by micromanaging his behavior. In order to determine if a student has learned the material, he should be tested. Testing should be the only means of judging whether or not a student understands and knows a subject.

Homework and attendance should never be graded. Grading homework interferes with the learning process. The purpose of homework is to learn the material and is not a tool for testing if a student understands it. Play is an important part of learning. Homework is the toy of academic learning. It's analogous to a person learning baseball. You must have the future baseball player fiddle around with the ball. See how it feels in his hand, how it travels through the air, and become use to catching it at different angles. You can't put him into a game directly after showing him the baseball and explaining the rules.

It is the student's responsibility to ensure himself that he understands the material. Testing should be the means of natural selection in academics. With no assistance from a rubric, testing alone should weed out the bad students.
