We pay taxes to be protected not to be harmed, if i cant feel protected by the law then maybe we need a new law system. Love n thought goes out to the family and friends who lost an innocent one.

I can't believe this happened. I hope there is justice for the actions taken by the police. Lethal force should be a last resort. A lot more could have been done before they decided to end his life. Now his family will never see him again. Thoughts and prayers for his family. He will be missed.

To the family of James Hayward, you really should file a lawsuit against the policeman that shot him and you should file a lawsuit against the Port Hardy RCMP and the Town of Port Hardy. I really hope your family receives millions of dollars in compensation. Get a lawyer to help you if you plan to file a lawsuit.

What's the matter with having a net to throw over a person like that. Or taser,pepper spray , etc. The RCMP murdered your loved one. I am so sorry. I hope those police officers responsible are in jail right now. They should be. I would like to say a lot more about the RCMP but the focus now is the family of James. So sad. RIP James.

We the people, need a conviction of second degree murder charge to set a legal president in Canada, for situation like this where the officers in question are at fault for the loss of life, or grevious bodily harm. This is a sad day for all Canadians. Police have far too much assumed power. They are our servants, not our overlords.

I agree that more could have been done to de-esculate the situation. There was not need to shoot the man so many times. It's not like the cop was cornered…they were in open ground on the road for crying out loud. One cop could have shot him in the hand that had the gun and the other one take him down and put cuffs on. I am so very sorry for the loss of this young man. My heart goes out to the family. I pray that somehow justice will prevail.

James Reginald Butters, has several criminal convictions in Port Hardy in 2012 and 2013 including assault, break and enter, robbery, unlawful confinement and uttering threats. Yep. Pillar of the community......

There is no reason the officers involved could not just shot this young man in the leg or even shoulder. Certainly, this action would have stopped him, no need to KILL him dead.
