Get it Together
The purpose of this petition is to gather support for teaching and using the metric system in United States public schools. The metric system is used universally by the rest of the world, while the Customary system is solely used in the U.S. In order for the our country to maintain its reputation as an industrial leader, it is important for children to be competitive in the fields of mathematics, science, and technology. In our current public school system, children are typically taught the Customary system at a young age. When children reach higher division science classes in high school, they often must learn several conversions in order to present measurements in metric units. Learning this new system of measurement can be difficult to many students and oftentimes conversions give rise to inaccuracy. Initially teaching students to use the metric system at an early age would eliminate confusion and inaccuracy, thus enabling students to be active competitors in the expanding global fields of research, medicine, and technology.
This petition pleas for a government-enforced program for public education that assimilates young students into using the metric system in their first years of schooling.
