I even forgot about the community-building aspects, which tie it so perfectly into IB. Middle school dance is based on projects which allow the students to work together, building community and communication skills. They also get to explore and share dance from around the world, promoting the IB emphasis on global citizenship.

Dance works great with the IB curriculum and there is a room specifically outfitted for dance at Randolph Middle School, so they should continue to offer it. Randolph is IB and thus is already a college readying school that emphasizes community building and organization. They do not need an AVID program. Beyond Randolph, dance should be offered in schools anyways. It is an opportunity for students to get active, letting out the energy that builds up in sit-down core classes. It is a creative outlet as it allows students to express their thoughts and interests. It fosters a mind-body connection to help students understand themselves better and it seamlessly integrates with social-emotional learning. Dance integrates literacy and history every day. Students are asked to write and read about dances every day, and when learning about dances they look at their historical context. Dance helps build up students mentally, physically, and emotionally and this is evident in student performance. Many students who are often sent out of class or have failing grades thrive in dance. They are engaged, participatory, and excited to come to class. These are not claims just based on anecdotal evidence. This is based on research. There are many students who seek out this school not only for IB but because of the dance program. Many students were so upset that they cried when the dance was removed from the schedule. This is a beloved program that has many benefits to both students and the curriculum. CMS's money that went into building a specialized dance room and the passion Randolph students have for dance should not be thrown aside for a redundant program. The student voices should be heard with this petition and dance should remain an offered course at Randolph.
