Access to care is a critical issue these days and can be facilitated by general supervision for dental hygienists. Mississippi is the butt of a lot of jokes about a denture-wearing population. We need to promote dental health.

We as dentists fearfully and vehemently object to the idea of the mid-level provider. Yet we continue to want to keep a choke hold on hygienists. Its time to allow hygienists to be the health professionals they have trained to be. General supervision DOES NOT diminish in any way the oversight of dentists, it enhances it and makes us more efficient.

I have been a Hygienist for over 20 years and I think we should be able to do our job without a Dentist. That’s why we are educated.

This is definitely a Liability issue!!! In Lots of offices across MS, dentist /Hyg are working under general supervision although the Law states Direct. Why does MS have to be the last state ?? Most all legislators and representatives Iv spoken with says, the wording needs to be changed because all other practitioners with our Education level are working under the same guidelines of General Supervision. Being a lower income state, we can see an increase in Access to Care for elders and children to preventive Oral Care! This will inevitably reduce the amount of tax dollars needed for oral care or Emergency room visits for elders and children in MS.

I am in support of hygienists practicing under general supervision. It will have a positive effect in regard to time management and office hours of operation for our busy dentists

General supervision would allow dental hygienists to fully play their role as preventive dental care providers.
