I work in MS and TN. Our TN office is SO much more productive. We practice general supervision AND can do local anesthesia. Let's make MS more competitive in the dental field. We are so behind!

I totally support general supervision for dental hygienists. I don’t see how a hygienist could do any more harm to a patient than a dentist could do, performing the basic duties of a hygienist. As long as the patient knows that he or she will have a thorough exam by the dentist, then everything should be in perfect order.

It doesn't take a doctorate to realize this benefits EVERYONE. The dentist can leave the office early, or take vacation while money is still coming in and we won't have to inconvenience patients by rescheduling all the time. Win, win, win.

The Georgia legislature passed general supervision for dental hygienists in 2017. The law became effective Jan. 1, 2018. Hygienists in Georgia may now be authorized by their doctor to see a patient for a prophylaxis without the doctor needing to be physically present in the treatment room. The doctors love it!
General supervision does not change the duties delegated to a hygienist by their supervising dentist, it only means that the dentist does not have to be physically present when the patient is seen; if the doctor goes home sick, is late to office, takes the afternoon off, or schedules a day out of the office the patient can still have their teeth cleaned by the hygienist.
General supervision has been authorized in other states for many years with no adverse effects. NO state that has authorised general supervision has rescinded the law.
It is good for the patients, the doctor, the hygienist and the office.
