On June 19th 2012 the Ontario Government took a progressive step in legislating that school boards across the province must support gay straight alliances. this is our opportunity to continue pushing for awareness of LGBTQ issues. We need to send a message to our government that Individuals who identify as a sexual minority are indeed important members of our society. I would like individuals to sign this petition which will be delivered to the minister of education to legislate that LGBTQ issues be mandatory in all sexual education classes across the publicly funded school boards of Ontario. LGBTQ issues should not be deceminated from popular forms of media which work to reaffirm the heteronormativeness of our society. If we begin educating youth at a young age about LGBTQ issues we will be taking another step toward a truly inclusive society. Bill 13 the accepting school act is an initial step and we need to continue this positive momentum. but instead of just suggesting the government continue to legislate more solutions for the LGBTQ community, I Believe that a group should be formed calling on the LGBTQ community to create this curriculum where elected community representatives will discuss and create the material to be presented in Ontario class rooms, Empowering the community in this way will ensure that the marginalizaton of LGBTQ communities is stopped and youth will be properly educated about these marginalized individuals.
