Dear parents of FWCS children,
This year is the first that i've been aware of the fact that our children are being forced to walk to and from school if they're less than 2 miles away. This seems to me unfair and unsafe. Most of the school year it is still dark when they leave for school and on many days the temperature is dangerously below freezing. If a child can't get to school due to weather and no transportation the parent and student alike are punished.
I've been told that they've decided to do this due to cost. Im not sure how stopping at a place you're passing by can possibly cost more than not stopping does.
- Aside from weather, within the last 365 days 2 collage boys went missing and are yet to have been found. COLLEGE age. Making our high school and younger kids walk alone is a huge concern and terrible danger.
I would like to take as many signatures as possible to our legislature. I've been told by FWCS that this is the only way to try making this change. Please sign to help protect our children.

I used to walk 1/4 mile to get to school and even this small distance caused havoc when weather was too bad to walk but okay enough for school to stay open. This usually resulted in me missing school. I can imagine how rough it would be for kids walking farther.
My kids are now grown and I glad we missed this. I read about it when it was decided and thought it was a really bad idea. I wonder how many remember Aljandra? The 12 year old girl that went missing from the south side of ft Wayne and was found dead months later in a field in another county. She had a short 1 block walk to a bus stop. She never made it to school. Simon Rios lived close to her and kidnapped, raped and murdered her and then killed his family and ultimately himself as a result. The point? That little girl only had to walk a block. 2 miles or less puts these kids at risk. There are gangs, sex trafficking rings , rapists and child molesters all throughout this city and country unfortunately. As for the folks that decided this, well, they have a nice warm car in the winter, don't have to walk in the rain or heat that can be just as dangerous for some kids, such as those with asthmatic issues and probably don't even see how detrimental is is that some kids are bussed. SOCAP. It's a.program that can ultimately remove a child from their home based on unexcused tardies that add up to unexcused absence claims. How long does it take a 10 year old to walk 2 miles? Sure. Parents can drive them if they want to as long as they have a car, and are willing to be late for their jobs, ect. It's just an oversight that isn't safe for the kids if this community. Cut some cost elsewhere. I'm not suprised by this though, because a kid whose parents are struggling can't have a pbj for lunch either.
Please help keep our kids safe and do what's right by them and the parents.
Whoever makes the decisions about riding the school bus needs to get out and walk with the kids.
This is dangerous and you are supposed to be protecting it kids.

Anything more than a half mile walk is too far for any kid in Fort Wayne. This is NOT a safe city with gunshots ringing at all hours of the day and night and people just disappearing, never to be found. Provide transportation to all kids over 1/2 mile away from their school! The safety of children isn’t where you make expense cuts!!!!!
