I would like to express my concern about the proposed cutting funding for the clubs, sports, and art programs. I believe they are essential to well-rounded education. They give the kids an opportunity to learn team work, make good friends, as well as grow as individuals in areas that interest them and are passionate about. I'm a pastor and in church we always talk about importance of youth and children, they are our future. If we cannot invest in the children in our community, then where are our priorities? I oppose any cuts of extracurricular activities, even if it would mean increase in my taxes. I hope that the board will reconsider cutting these school activities.

As a teacher, and a music educator, I find cutting any extracurriculars detrimental to a student’s education. In society, we want well rounded individuals. If students only have academics in an education, they will miss out on social and emotional connections that are needed in an education. Students will miss out on potential scholarship opportunities as they would not have had the necessary steps prior to be a contender for a scholarship. Finally, extracurricular activities may be the one connection keeping students from feeling lost, dropping out of school, or commuting suicide. Students need extracurricular activities to showcase talents, practice necessary individual and team skills, and use as an outlet where students can be successful, feel wanted, and be a part of the community. If this decision ultimately goes through, I would be looming to move where my daughter will be able to have a well rounded education.

Please hear us all express how important this is to those whom this entire educational process is about. Taking away the extracurricular activities is taking away the heart and often motivation of our school process. We have seven children in the school district. The music programs is why they want to go to school and are motivated in many ways. Our oldest son will be a senior. We were so concerned as to how he would do in high school and were completely amazed at how he went from anxious and withdrawn to outgoing, excited and determined all because of marching band. It would be devastating to him to not have band, choir, and Theater this year. Also, this is a year we have talked about since the kids were little because we would have 3 children in high school band together. These are just an example of the stories behind the cries you are hearing. We would gladly pay extra taxes to not lose these programs!!

Our kids need these sports. They age out of most club sports. This is not right.

Please do not take away the arts. These activities will help children long after they leave the halls of WASD. Think how you would have felt if your club or activity was stripped away from you because you didn’t have the creative thinking to get around a money issue. Your teenage self would shake their head and probably give you a wet willy for even thinking of canceling a club.
Be more creative and try harder. Try again.

These are kids futures at stake. These are kids sanity at stake. We were already put through a pandemic, now your gonna take the only thing we can really enjoy? Take scholarship opportunities? Take away options for college applications? Take away the only thing some of us have to release the stress that school builds up? The kids that are the most involved, with the highest test scores, which fund your school,
are going to leave, allowing Waynesboro to further decline. Think about cutting middle school sports, while they are still young enough to play recreational sports in town. Then have the opportunity to play in highschool. Have each club/sport do more fundraisers. There are always more options.

Before you decide it’s cheaper to take these activities away reflect on your own life. Do you hear a song and remember some fond memory? The artists singing that song probably first fell in love with music when they were in school and a teacher fostered and encouraged their love of music. Are you a sports fan? Most kids are introduced into sports at a young age and then in school their talent is nurtured and honed by a coach who sees potential in them to be someone great. Do you love art? A beautiful painting an incredible photograph that was captured at just the right moment? Again this love of art was fostered by programs in school. Someone who guided and encouraged their god given talent. Now imagine Music, Sports the Arts all erased from the world because their was no program available to foster those talents. Is that the kind of world you want to live in? I know I don’t. Think carefully about what your saving. Are you saving money or are you saving a world from losing all color and life as we know it.

The research and statistics are still the same as they have been years ago when this very issue was raised — extracurricular activities: sports, music, clubs, are VITAL to students’ success. These programs provide children with a creative outlet, opportunities to work as a team, a chance to collaborate with faculty and staff in a new way and most importantly, maintain healthy mind and bodies.
I know I would not be where I am today, a few years short of becoming a physician if it were not for the extracurricular opportunities I was afforded at WASD.
I, my family and several hundred others unwaveringly support the raise of taxes.

I believe arts and sports help drive kids to be better, at their studies and to be better people in their lives and communities. These activities gives children belonging when they may feel like they don’t belong anywhere. Music, band and sports our great outlets to help kids determine what they want to be and may keep kids from getting into things they shouldn’t be getting into. Waynesboro already has a substance problem and these activities could be saving them from making wrong decisions. Look at kids that have graduated with scholarships because of these programs that they may have not been able to continue their education without that scholarship and become something better. I seriously hope that for both my children’s sake, soon to be 9th grader and 4th grade, that you don’t rob them and many others of these experiences by making a very detrimental decision that will hurt not just our kids but the community as a whole.

Please keep sports in the schools, my grandson has been involved in cross country and track since Middle school and will be a senior this coming school year it would be a shame if he couldn't finish this to the end . It gives the athletes a sense of achievement and Boro pride to wear the colors and have the town cheer them on. Plus the look on the parents faces as they watch their child compete is wonderful.

Extracurricular activities have indicated consistent attendance, better academic achievement, and a strive by those who participate to reach for higher education. Personally it allowed me to have an outlet from an unstable home life, build lasting friendships that still exists today, and taught me to persevere to be better. Our children should be allowed to have the same experience so they may grow to realize the world does not stop at town lines, but rather there is a whole world of opportunity waiting for them.
