We, the citizens of the Town of Chevy Chase, Maryland, believe in a fully-informed electorate and open elections.
We believe no person should be entitled to serve on the Town Council without publicly disclosing his or her candidacy at least one week prior to the election. Such a requirement would parallel the rule for write-in candidates seeking state office.
We urge the Town Council to amend the Town's election code to require 7-day advance disclosure, the same as in the State of Maryland.
Citizens should have time to vet the people who wish to serve them and know what they stand for in advance of voting. An informed electorate is vital. Not having candidates declare at least a week in advance allows unknown agendas to muddy the water and breeds suspicion and mistrust.
