Do you have any idea how much this would upset the timeline of the rest of the story, INCLUDING The Lord of the Rings??? It CANNOT work. It isn't about one character, it's the entire story and what happens over the next 60+ years.

Peter Jackson, has already changed many things from the book to flim adaptation, (Legolas, Tauriel, Radagas being in the story with a rabbit pulled sledge, Azog still being alive etc), So why not let him live? So much been changed or altered already (most of the changes were unwanted and unlikable), so why not have a change we do like! I mean can someone honestly say that while they were reading the book they wanted Thorin to die?

Richard Armitage's portrayal of Thorin is truly masterful and I have thoroughly enjoyed watching how he skilfully develops the character. The only protest that I've had with the book since the beginning is that Thorin embarks on the journey with the company, faces Azog (Bolg in the book), verbally spars with Thranduil, battles the gold lust within himself and eventually has to cope with the loss of Fili and Kili before his own death. After all the trials that Thorin faces, I find it distasteful that Dain Ironfoot is the one to become King Under the Mountain at the end of all things. Especially as Dain refused to give his support to the quest when it was but a thought, but then receives all the benefits or the trials and terrors that the company had to face. Aside from the Battle of the Five Armies, Dain resultantly had the throne handed to him on a silver platter.

I too would like to have an ending where Thorin doesn't die... but instead of being the only ending - perhaps have that as an alternate ending in a Director's cut or something. Thank you.

I know it's too late for such a change to be made, but all the same, I do like the idea of expressing my personal distaste for the way Thorin (and his nephews, too, though that's not what this petition is about) are killed off in the book, and evidently, the final film. Yes, Thorin's death is supposed to be a lesson in what happens to those who let pride and greed consume them, but honestly, Thorin does not die because of what happened with the Arkenstone. Thorin would have _lived_ if he hadn't gone out to join the battle, to do his part. He risked his life, and for that, he is punished with death. I honestly think, had he been given the chance to live on, he would have been able to benefit from the lesson he learns, the words of his redemption he expresses to Bilbo on his deathbed. The way it actually plays out, though, his redemption- like Boromir's, for that matter- is for naught. Really, our only consolation is that he dies, according to Richard Armitage, "at peace, and full of love." I do so wish he could've had the chance to learn from his errors and become the mighty, good hearted dwarf king he was supposed to be.

Sorry, I'm just trying to recall where in The Two Towers Aragorn is thrown over a cliff edge by a wolf and where in the same book an army of Elves appear in Helms Deep. And apart from a very brief mention in The Fellowship I don't remember seeing Tom Bombadill in the film. True, nobody has rights to change Tolkiens works but many changes have occurred. Quite frankly I think Thorin should die as he is meant to. Don't bang on about no one has rights to change it when so much has already been changed and altered! And don't forget about Saruman in the third film! Where the fuck did he disappear to? He was supposed to be in the Shire, kicking arse! Not shot by Legolas on top of his tower!!

I hope to see Thorin impaled on the lance of a half troll at the Battle of the Five Armies and with his last breath apologize to Bilbo..That would be an adequate compromise between the actual plot and Jackson's OTT CGI grand-standing. Fili and Kili must die as well, because the films are based on the books.

Personally, I would like to see all the Durins survive the BOtFA. Even when I read The Hobbit as a child, I didn't like the ending and thought it most unfair, especially to Fili and Kili - not to mention Dis. I would like to see an alternative ending.

It would be heart healing to see Thorin Oakenshield overcome his dragon sickness, survive and become a generous and wise king under the mountain. That would show that no one has to follow his family patterns and can be different than he was conditioned by how he was raised. At least in a movie......

I am an author too -- which basically is why I'm not saying this lightly -- so while I do agree that we should respect the source material when adapting, I really don't see the problem in letting Thorin live. At the end of the day, it comes down to one basic fact: it's fiction.

I am an adult, I can choose to read that book and embrace that darkness. It is beautifully tragic, but too much for a young audience. Please reconsider Thorin's death. He wold make a great King Under the Mountain.
