I did not receive a poor mark on the paper; however, I do believe that flaws existed within the marking scheme. For example, there were marks deducted because I did not address limitations enough, but there was not enough room for me to do so and still address all aspects of the assignment effectively. Overall, I feel as though the grading scheme was disjointed and inconsistent, and I don't believe that the marking process was entirely fair.

I'm a 4th year student who took this course as an elective. I've never experienced a more poorly outlined assignment, and unfair marking scheme in my four years here. There wasn't any feedback on my paper, and it is the worst grade I've received on a paper.

I am a 4th year student and this is a 2nd year class- this paper grade was the worst mark I have ever received in my four years here at the University of Guelph. It was marked unfair and the outline was unclear.

As a fourth year student taking this course as an elective, the mark I received will have a severe impact on my graduating average. The way my paper was marked made it seem as if I had never written a paper before.

For my paper in particular, my TA made 11 comments, however they were not comments on how to make my paper better, they were comments asking further questions about what I had stated. I personally think this is a tad unfair since we were strapped for space considering all the information that they wanted included in the 5 pages. Furthermore, I had written 5 lines worth of limitations in my body paragraph and then expanded and added on them in my conclusion and they said that I had unclear mentions of limitations. I also copied the example of how we were expected to compare and contrast the research methods (obviously imputing my own topic) and I they said that my studies were not research based. So I am certainly confused.

I couldn't agree with you more! I work hard on mine and was excited to get my mark back because I thought it went really well but my mark was absolutely awful and very harshly marked. I understand and see where I lost some marks but I definitely did not deserve the mark that was given to me. I followed the rubric really closely and yet one of her comments was that I hadn't payed attention to the rubric which is absolutely untrue. This is ridiculous, thanks for taking a stand and doing this. Seems everyone is having a beef with the professors marking.

Jill, you are a saint. Grading this strict is discouraging, unjust, and does little in the way of providing constructive feedback. The expectations for this paper were unfitted for the assignment instructions. The topics assigned were very limiting for a literature review, and the evaluation seems to be more geared towards a research proposal.
I am in my fourth year and have written countless research papers on a diverse spectrum of topics, and have excelled in each one. This assignment, however, was a struggle to get into, and had earned me my lowest grade to date. It is easy to attribute this to my own intellectual deficit, but considering the feedback from everyone else, I'm starting to think that the assignment in itself was flawed.
A research paper should allow a student to explore a specific topic of their own choosing. The topic should be narrowed down based on personal exploration of the academic literature, but this paper forced us to cater to a predetermined conclusion. That's not how scientific papers work. It just isn't. Therefore, you cannot hold it to the same standard as a scientific paper. This is highschool level research, and ought to be graded as such.
