We respectfully ask the Pocantico Hills Board of Education to support the World Language Program by instituting Option 3 as proposed by Carol Conklin-Spillane. Option 3 of the World Language Program was the third of three considerations presented by the School Superintendent at the March 21st Board Meeting.
Option 3:
Increasing staffing to 2.0 FTE
Providing a content-driven FLES Program in both French and Spanish K through 8
Extending language study to have classes meeting 4/6 cycle days in Middle School
Integrating language study into special areas
We the undersigned cannot support a budget that does not respect these parameters.
WE should be adding and expanding foreign language options, not reducing them. Other schools in the area offer Mandarin Chinese in addition to Spanish, and French. Fluency or at least familiarity with different languages is a key component to improved communication skills and understanding our multicultural community.
