Keep French as a second language in Crawford Pretoria
Keep French as a second language in Crawford Pretoria
We parents of children learning French as a second language in Crawford Pretoria are not satisfied with the recent school’s decision to stop the teaching of French as a second language and to replace it by Afrikaans language classes from next year.
Being part of the international community, our stay in South Africa is by definition for a limited period (in average 2 to 3 years) for that reason we don’t understand why our children would have to learn Afrikaans as they are not going to pass the matric here.
We consider that the learning of Afrikaans for our kids is of little value as it’s not an international language they could use after our posting in South Africa. We believe that learning French was a much better option for their future and we want them to continue studying this language.
The fact that Crawford Pretoria was proposing French as a second language was a major factor in the decision to send our children to Crawford.
As we are not going to reside in South Africa for ever, the loss of 4 hours per week of education times is not acceptable and we want Crawford management to reconsider the proposal, by either reintroducing French classes or in the worst case scenario to allow the children to spent this time in the library to study French or another international language by their own.
If you share our opinion and want Crawford Pretoria to reconsider its decision of stopping the teaching of French as a second language, please support this petition.
We will then request a meeting Mr McLeod and Mrs Naidoo to discuss the potential solutions. Even if you are going to leave the country next year, your support is welcome!
We believe that all together we can make a difference!
Please feel free to contact us to discuss the proposal.

UPDATE ON 14th NOVEMBER :
We had a meeting this morning with Mr McLeod and Mrs Naidoo concerning our demand to keep French as a second language in Crawford and they have informed us of their decision to reconsider their proposal concerning French classes.
They have accepted to keep French as a second language on the condition of introducing a little bit of Africans just for our children to be exposed to Africans and to meet the South African laws.
Practically next year the 6 days cycle will be the following:
- 7 periods of French
- 2 periods of Africans (with no evaluation)
We thanked them for having reconsidered their decision in the interest of our children and expressed our satisfaction with the new proposal.
Thank you for your support, by acting collectively we’ve been able to engage in a successful dialogue with Crawford management team.
