The Indeterminate Sentence for Public Protection (IPP) was abolished on May 1st 2012, but many prisoners who have served years more than their given tariffs remain in jail. Shaun Lloyd from Cardiff was 18 when he was sentenced to an IPP sentence, with a 2 and a half year tariff in 2005 for street robberty. Seven years on and he still remains in prison despite completing every course asked of him by the authorities. He has lost vital years of his youth, and sees no light at the end of the tunnel. A report by the Prison Reform Trust described the IPP sentence as "one of the least carefully planned and implemented pieces of legislation in the history of British sentencing", and the evidence is clear with thousands of mothers and wives across the country asking when their loved ones will be out of prison. It is inhumane and unjust to give people prison indeterminate sentences, and the abolishment of the IPP sentence shows the government knows this. However, those who were given IPP sentences are still stuck in jail. We want Shaun Lloyd and all other IPP prisoners who have served their tariffs to be released and for their life licenses to be abolished too, so they have the chance to live normal lives again and integrate back into society.
