The government of Zimbabwe has once again illegally detained a civic leader while accusing him of subversion charges. Tajamuka leader, Mr. Promise Mkwananzi has been remanded in custody at Chikurubi Maximum Prison facing charges of subversion. As Zimbabweans who value freedom of assembly and expression, we condemn the government’s action with the contempt it deserves and call for his unconditional release, failure of which, we will appeal to SADC, the African Union, and the United Nations for international pressure to force the government to release the leader of the social justice movement. He is accused of calling for Mass Action in January which is his constitutional right as a Zimbabwean citizen who holds his government accountable for mismanagement, corruption, and oppression. Mr. Mkwananzi is innocent and should be released.

We call upon the government of Zimbabwe to release Promise Mkwananzi as soon as possible and to stop arresting Civic Society leaders on trumped up charges. No amount of repression will stop us from demanding a just society and the upholding of human rights in Zimbabwe.
