Free Jafar Panahi

On 20 December 2010, the public learned, with great anger and concern of the harsh sentence handed down to Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi.
Accused of being a dissident, he was condemned to six years’ imprisonment without remission, accompanied by a twenty-year ban on writing and making films, giving interviews to the press or leaving the country.
This is a drastic measure by the Iranian regime to silence its critics and an attack against the freedom of artistic expression and speech.

Jafar Panahi is one of the most internationally renowned Iranian filmmakers. His films have garnered numerous accolades, such as the Silver Bear for Offsideat at the Berlinale in 2006, the Golden Lion for The Circle at Venice Film Festival in 2000 and the Camera d’Or for The White Balloon at Cannes Film Festival in 1995.

International film organizations and professional associations have invited their members and filmmakers around the world to sign online petitions in protest against Jafar Panahi’s harsh sentence. In Germany and France intellectuals and film professionals are demanding the lifting of this sentence. We, too, protest against this injustice.

Jafar Panahi is representative of the numerous artists and intellectuals sentenced and imprisoned in Iran.
We, the signatories of this petition, demand the immediate and unconditional lifting of Panahi’s sentence and the release of all imprisoned artists and intellectuals in Iran.

i grew up watching his movies. so much talent being wasted in a prison cell because someone felt threatened by his voice. pure injustice.

Twenty years without being allowed to make a film is just cruel. He is a genius filmmaker and hes being silenced for nothing.

Art should never be a crime. This is just pathetic to see in this day and age. Let the man work.
