Great plans, Chichester needs this.

I live in Sidlesham and shop in Chichester, the proposed plan by the Council will force people to shop elsewhere. Are they nuts? Time to sack the accountants and employ people that can see the bigger picture for both the local residents and businesses! My guess is that if they totally grid lock the area by implementing this that they will reserect there other ridiculous plan for the A27.

I can't believe it has taken since June 1846, when the problem first manifested itself, for someone to come up with such a simple elegant solution.

Very sensible solution to a long standing problem and far better than the council's own short-sighted options.

As long term residents of Chichester we feel the biggest problem now is traffic volumes exacerbated by the level crossing gates at Southgate A wonderful only opportunity now to get rid of them. The CDC must not ignore this most important option. To do so now would be regrettable

Excellent game-changing solution that has the potential to become a key and attractive feature of Chichester and radically improve the area surrounding the railway station.

I honestly believe the plans proposed here would massively benefit Chichester but from a logistical traffic point of view but also culturally and aesthetically. You have my full support for freeflow.

I feel it is really important the the level crossings should be included in the solution for the Southern Gsteway consultation. Nothing should be thought to be 'too difficult'.

I support the Freeflow concept but without improving the flow of traffic along the A27 there is little point in doing anything in a town which cannot be easily reached. The delays at the level crossing are nothing compared to the cost to the local economy of delays on the A27. Both improvements to traffic flow are needed.

I like your proposals. 1)Long term raising the railway would end the area being cut in two. 2)Tunnel solution better than bridge and maybe cheaper. By using lower level around sorting office would mean less digging.

So much better than council proposals. Work up these first thoughts.

This scheme to avoid both railway gates sounds the perfect idea to implement if it helps access from south of the A27 into Chichester. It also needs to link in to the proposed improvements to the A27, whatever they end up being?

...and it doesn't help that all the crossings between Chichester and Barnham are all manually controlled, unlike from Chichester to Havant which are all automatically triggered by the trains. When will railtrack invest in modernising the signalling?

Yes. Finally a sensible solution to the traffic entering Chi from the Donnington and southerly areas. And to be frank, the projected £10 million cost is chicken feed compared to the proposed spend on the A27 improvements! But the layout beneath the new bridge should ensure safe walkway for station to the High School and improve cycle access to the High School to encourage more to cycle.

Every pound spent on improving the southern approach to Chichester i.e. the Southern Gateway will be an utter waste without the provision of an alternative to the Stockbridge Road and Basin Road level crossings in order to avoid the constant congestion/gridlock around the railway and bus stations. When I moved here from Switzerland 30 years ago I could not believe the chaos which the level crossings caused, and was convinced that in an advanced country like the UK, there would be plans to solve the problems imminently. 30 years on, the traffic and associated problems have simply multiplied, and what is even more shocking is that in the Southern Gateway Draft Masterplan this issue has been ignored, indeed, the proposals therein will lead to far worse traffic congestion. Ideally there would be a tunnel to alleviate the traffic jams, but the Freeflow plan for a new road bridge between Stockbridge Road and Basin Road would certainly be the best alternative. Congratulations to Richard Hutchinson and Martin Winch on taking the initiative to propose a “regeneration” plan which is fit for purpose.

To my knowledge the city council has been exploring these options for several years.They have been looking at both tunnel and bridge options .They believe there is insufficient distance between the main road to make the tunnel option viable .The bridge option has many technical difficulties not least ,the relatively new high rise office block that blocks the path of a bridge close to the station Nick
