When a child is born abroad, but then adopted by loving United States Citizen parents, a judgment is sent down in a court of law stating, "the Petitioners shall hereafter be under the same responsibility to the said infant and be entitled to the same rights and privileges as the natural parents, as if the child were their natural child, and the said infant shall from the date hereof have no legal relationship to his biological mother or biological father." This concludes that adoptive parents are true and legal parents and all of their children no matter their originality shall be given the same rights as natural born children. One would assume that this means the children are now United States Citizens, however, due to a change in issuing new birth certificates, as of December 31st, 2010, this assumption is no longer true. Now, in order to have an adopted child's status upgraded to a United States Citizen, the adopted parents must fill out a form known as the N-600 and submit this to USCIS (US Immigration). While one might assume this is not such a big deal, without this application being completed, the child is not named a US citizen. This form costs $159.00 just to download and then an additional $550.00 to file. Effectively forcing adoptive parents to PAY $709 plus postage and time in order to gain their children the same rights and privileges as natural born children, despite any court judgment already granting these children said freedoms. This petition is a protest against such high fees and red tape just to grant adopted children citizenship status they should already have. Please, if you feel as I do, that this is an injustice to these adopted children, sign this petition and pass it along to your friends.
