We call on Kingston Communications and Hull City Council to provide free Wifi to all areas, including all households, in Kingston-upon-Hull. This could be achieved by creating a 'mesh' of secure access points around the city, providing free, limited usage at relatively low cost to the operator. Free Wifi schemes already exist in numerous other cities, including in Italy, Finland, the USA and Taiwan. In the UK, parts of Swindon and London have free coverage. Hull has very low levels of internet coverage at present due to high costs and low incomes in the city. What are the benefits? - A boost in the local economy, as people find it easier to work from home, search for jobs and set up their own businesses. - A boost for the city, at a time when Hull is vying to be a UK City of Culture - A boost for the operator, which can then charge users a fee for faster connections. People are more likely to take up the offer of a better connection once they already have a basic connection.
