Steven Zenuni has been convicted of a murder and sentenced to life imprisonment with a non-parole period of 10.5 years. The grounds of his conviction are based on a legal principle called 'Joint Enterprise' Steven did not murder anyone. He played a part in the events leading up to the victim's death; however, he was not the main perpetrator. His co-accused led Steven to the scene of the crime, forced him to take drugs and threatened him to perform acts he would never have done otherwise. Steven had no linking of the co-accused's plans; there was neither premeditation not intent on his end. On a case with no more than one accused, the element of intent is one of the most important factors to be proven beyond resonance doubt in order for someone to be guilty of commuting murder. However, as Steven had been accused along with another man, their case immediately fell under the doctrine of joint enterprise. According to the joint enterprise rule, a person will be held accountable for the actions of another person, if r it she had contributed to the planning or execution of a crime in any way OR had foreseen the possibly of the crime occurring EVEN IF he or she did NOT commit the crime We do not believe that the joint enterprise rule should have applied to Steven. First, he had no knowledge of the crime that was about to occur until he was led to the crime scene and was force by the main culprit to commit acts that tied him to the murder. Second, Steven did not kno the victim and did not have any intention to comity said crime. The victims family have said they har forgiven Steen for the part he played as they know who the real culprit is. They described the co-accused as a 'manipulating liar' who lured both Steven and the Victim to the crime scene. This petition is formed from our belief that the joint enterprise rule is responsible for wrongful convictions and imprisonment of innocent people all over the world.
