Reinstate Free Speech at the University of Edinburgh

Aren't Universities are the last places to restrict the freedom of speech?

Offense is taken, not given. Offensive hand gestures? What's next, thought censorship?

It is absolutely ridiculous and pathetic what is going on in universities, the concept of safe spaces only promotes segregation, racism and sexism, not preventing it. You are raising a horde of weak minded and selfish people.

It's time to put paid to the 'safe space' fascists occupying university campuses around the world.

I'm not even from the UK or anything but this kind of stuff needs to be stopped, so I cannot in good conscience NOT support this.

I graduated from Edinburgh University in 1963. I'm glad that I'm not studying there today, in such an atmosphere of hate! As a joint British and Israeli citizen, I think that university students should be able to listen to both sides of every complicated situation.

I see too much pandering to those ready to be offended. Universities should uphold the rational, not the emotional.

This kind of cencorship is the thin end of the wedge.

I was a student at Edinburgh University and graduated in 2003. While at university I heard many opinions I did not agree. I heartily defend the right of any student to express unpopular opinions. They should then be ready to have those opinions countered by reasoned debate rather than punitive attempts to silence them!

I am a Research Fellow at the University of Edinburgh - and I have never been more disappointed in the policies of my employer.

It is a travesty what is becoming of this university. If one can't handle having one's opinions challenged, then a university is the last place you should ever enroll.

I don't even understand how this policy at Edinburgh could possibly be defended in any rational way. Happy to sign on.

Liberalist/socialist policies and practices aim to restrict all views and opinions that differ from their agenda. A political version of an Emu with its head in the sand. Man up, safe-spaces are for the weak of mind, and in such an academic environment, absolutely intolerable. Time for the PC brigade to be removed, and for people to actually utilise the back bone they are equipped with.

Free speech is a mark of a civilized society. "Safe spaces" are the harbingers of a dictatorial one.

The requirement to physically participate but without the ability to do anything but listen and ratify the already decided opinion was a feature of communism called democratic socialism of democratic centralism. I am always dumfounded how little people will remember even relatively recent history. This was lies tyranny - what happened to pride in being a democrat?
