I agree with you, Charlie. It is completely and utterly disturbing to find this campus restricting the freedom for students. No matter one’s political stance, whether they are left wing, or right wing, or anywhere in between. Everyone has the right to express their opinions without fear of censorship. This right is found under Article 10 of the European Convention on Human Rights and has been in the Constitution of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland's for a few decades now, since the 20th century. Whether someone supports Israel or Palestine, or holds controversial views on territorial disputes or rights of people, whatever they find to be correct, their ability to speak should not be restricted. Silencing voices is not noble or honorable, it doesn't make you a pacifist or woke or whatever you would like to call it, it makes you a suppressor. The University of Edinburgh should allow this debate to flourish, and let other people's ideals and stances connect and mingle, however the art of sharing ideas is being hindered, and is withering. Shutting down debate is not only harmful to academic freedom but also undermines the very values a university should uphold. We must protect the right to speak, and not because we agree with every word spoken, but because free expression is the foundation of a free society.

I am signing this petition to support the right to free speech at the University of Edinburgh. Universities should be spaces where students and staff can express their views openly and engage in meaningful discussions without fear of censorship. Protecting free speech is essential for academic freedom, critical thinking, and personal growth. While it’s important to maintain respect and prevent hate speech, open dialogue on different topics—even controversial ones—helps create a stronger, more informed community. I believe the University of Edinburgh should fully commit to upholding free speech as a fundamental right for everyone on campus.
