Cubase has always been DRM'd with a hardware dongle (like an iLok, but actually a Steinberg custom one). These technologies are 1990s, but Cubase itself has evolved and should evolve beyond it.

Producers have a lot of choices here: Logic Pro (on all your macs); Ableton Live; Reason 8; Reaper; Sonar; Bitwig. Nearly all these products work without a dongle, and have a software-based licensing engine (Logic and Live do this best).

So you're on the road with your laptop. You don't have your dongle. You need to work on something. You are screwed. Or, you have, and then lose your dongle. All this thing does is prevent licensed users from using the software. The bad guys crack it anyway sooner or later.

Yamaha. Steinberg. It's time to change this. Cubase 8 Pro is great. But we most often choose the competition because they don't restrict moving back and forth between laptop and desktop the way this stupid USB key makes you.

We, the undersigned, hereby petition you - beg you - to fix this. In fact, it will improve business if you do, because all those micro decisions to use the other tools will fall in your favor. We'll choose Cubase more often. We'll build more skills in it on the road. It will become more and more the go to tool.

But as it is, carrying a dongle around, and risking losing it, and just plain not having it when you really need - all that is enabling your competition.
