This should be law and the Minister should drive this (pun not intended) I would like to think this govt isn't pandering to Chinese foreign interests, if it saves any motorist on any NZ road then it'll be worth it

I think it just makes common sense.

Our driver licence tests are designed for driving on NZ roads and following NZ laws so stands to reason that you need to learn our system before you get behind a wheel.

I completely agree with this. If you can't stay on the left then get out of this country.

It is criminal that anybody who DOESNT have a NZ LICENCE is allowed to KILL OTHER person on our roads. I AM APREHENSIVE about the danger of driving on our roads. There is nothing WRONG with our ROADS. After all WHO CONTROLS THE VEHICLE.

I totally support and agree that all foreign drivers sit a full drivers licence test before driving a vehicle of any sort on New Zealand roads.

NZ residents have to prove they can drive with a test, why not others. Our roads and conditions are vastly different from many other countries so other countries' licences aren't necessarily the equivalent.

Foreign drivers need to be held accountable for causing the death of someone whilst driving in our roads and need to serve the sentence in full

It's about time for a change to keep people safe on our roads from those who don't know the rules, it is purely common sense that this should happen

It takes us kiwis approximately 2 yrs to get our licenses and we have to have a full licensed driver beside us until such time we get our own full license. It needs to be this tough if not tougher on overseas visitors. You can't learn the road code and be able to drive over night.

Great Idea! Either this or they should have to sit a defensive driving course?

Inexperience and ignorance are too common in travellers from different countries, especially if driving on different side of road or not being familiar with the Western writing on signs.

I personally find the recklessness of foreign drivers, especially those on holiday from countries where they drive on the other side of the road, appalling. I have encountered foreign drivers driving on the WRONG SIDE OF THE ROAD, many times, especially on dangerous/risky roads, such as those headed towards Milford Sound and the West coast of the South Island. We must change this, before more innocent kiwis (and foreigners alike) die!
