Recently, Foothill Highschool's principal, Principal Burkhead has informed teachers and students that cameras being turned on is going to become mandatory starting January 11th. However, the students do not want that. There are several factors that affect a student's grade and cameras turned off is typically least disruptive to that grade. Forcing cameras is just going to make students uncomfortable and most likely focus on them self and what they look like rather than what they're doing in class. Students and teachers believe there are more cons than pros to this situation. There are students without the best home life they don't want to be seen, social anxiety, depression, and so on. There are multiple reasons why this shouldn't be enforced which I'm sure include your personal own.

I have been hearing from dozens of students about why the mandatory camera policy makes it impossible to focus on schoolwork. Take this link and text it to three classmates right now so we can pressure Principal Burkhead to change course.

I personally think that turning on my camera would make me feel very uncomfortable and nervous. I would be more focused on if I look okay more than focusing on my studies.
Enforcing everyone to have there cameras on isn’t a solution. I see what they are trying to accomplish but I’m very engaged in most of my classes And I’m never on camera, all the issues I’ve had doesn’t relate to students being engaged at all. If students want to be involved, if they want to participate it’s there choice, this period in learned definitely shows the students who want to step up and learn and those who won’t take any initiative.
I think that the policy should enforce more/better communication with teachers and the class, but forcing cameras won't necessarily help with participation. The social anxiety aspect of this is a major flaw and I'm sure Mrs. Burkhead can find a better solution
i completely agree. i know for a fact that during class I’m going to be focusing on my actions and remembering my camera is on instead of the lesson. i don’t think this will positively affect students in anyway.
It is unfair to ask students to turn their cameras on. Some people live in low-income housing and it is unfair to expect them to put their living area on display, and saying kids can blur their backgrounds is not an answer. It is also not right that this school is asking us to do this because it's against CCSD policy. Turning on camera also messes with kids bandwidth and slows connectivity down. It is just no okay that thy think this is a solution, they should try getting better teachers before they tell us we are the problem.

I personally had absolutely no motivation to go to school first semester, so I didn't. I finally do now and this is what I come back to. It's just making me not want to go again. The students you see succeeding with cameras on, are the kind of students that want them on. They're not focred, but they see it fit and do so because they're okay with that. Forcing a student will just make them unhappy. What's the point good grades without wellness?
