As part of a year ten, citizenship project we
have to choose an issue we feel strongly about in society today. Our group of 6
students have chosen to do our project on the quality of food and how it is
packaged. We are concerned mainly about meat produce, about animals that are
given hormones to make them grow faster and their potential effects on us,
about the conditions animals are kept on and how it goes against our morals. We
are also concerned about the pesticides used on plants and GM crops, which have
unknown effects on our health.
Nationally we are campaigning to alter the packaging of food items so that it clearly expresses vital
information about that product, for example if it contains GM crops, if it is
Halal or Kosher etc. By doing this people will be more aware about what is in
the food that they are buying and the impact of it.
Globally wantto petition to make
free range, organic and non-GM crop farmed foods available to everyone. We
believe this is very important, as someone’s wealth should not affect their
choices about food. If negative health effects are found out about pesticides
used on plants, hormones animals are given or GM crops it is likely that the
less wealthy band or people will experience the most harm as it is unlikely
they can afford organic or free range foods, even if they want to. We believe
this is very unfair.
We know we cannot, and do not wish to, force
anyone to buy a certain product, however we strongly feel that people should be
aware of the possible impacts of particular foods or have the option to buy
particular foods, so they can make informed decisions about what they eat and
what their children eat.
its about time we actually knew whats in our supermarket meat. no one should have to guess if there eating hormones or bad chemicals just because they cant afford fancy organic brands.
