I am writing to propose a change in the Food 4 Less community. This past semester in college as I learned about the harmful chemical BPA I asked myself many questions and looked towards further research. In class, we were assigned to list 20 things in a store that contained plastic. Tis was an easy assignment for me being that I work at a grocery store. However, as I began to pay attention to my job I realized that employees handle the most dangerous chemical in their everyday life. Thus, I researched the dangers of the chemical Bisphenol A.

In a research done by Newsweek they found that Bisphenol A causes cardiovascular diseases, diabetes type 2, asthma, prostate and breast cancer, and at some point has imitated the body's reproductive hormones. As a part of the same research they created a study where cashiers were urine levels were measured after handling receipts for a period of time. Researchers found that participant's urine had a drastic rise in BPA approximately four micrograms after two hours, and after eight hours their BPA levels had risen up to 11.1 micrograms. As oppose to those participants that wore gloves who showed no sign of BPA increase in their urine those who did not proved the point that BPA rapidly moves into our body without one taking it in count. Of course, there are many other ways that BPA may enter our body however, I focused on a small start where I know I can make a change.

Therefore, I hope you join my fight against receipts because the company can use other options for employees as well as for customers. My goal is to have Food 4 Less offer our customers the option to obtain e-receipts. In hopes that cashiers will be aware of the dangers that BPA in receipts causes and we will be able to do something to prevent these dangers.

Although my proposed action does make sense, I understand that there will be a few customers who will want receipts, thus, the company can provide their employees with nitrile gloves to protect against BPA.

In creating this petition I hope the Food 4 Less president takes in consideration my proposed actions for the fight against BPA and the protection of our customers as well as the employees of this outstanding company.
