I am a CNRS researcher in mathematics affiliated to a french computer science lab. All levels of research, from the most abstract ones in pure maths to the most applied one in technics, form a chain of interactions, with different aims sights and times, but with a global efficiency as such a chain. There would be no smartphone today if mathematicians had not formalized algebra and analysis a century ago. And there will not be a proper and efficient development of artifical intelligence (AI) in the future if theoretical research is restricted today to what seems to be "directly linked" with it today, which is a counterproductive short-term and narrowed viewpoint. Advances in this domain will necessarily also come from indirect applications of theoretical research at different levels of abstraction, or from different subjects that will be discovered later to be linked to this domain... In particular, various forms of algorithmics and combinatorics (two main domains in theoretical computer science) are obviously needed in the development of AI and data science.

It is valuable to keep foundational topics at the university because industry is difficult to face such topics. Ideas from computer science are often the key to digitization, but they are difficult for companies to study.

I think science is an industry like any other, and a big fan of applied research. On this page we see the face of Alan Turing who was one day asked to do some "stupid" code breaking. Best results are obtained when academics and engineers work together.
