The world has enough shallow people, let's focus on helping development of people with SOLID FOUNDATIONS.

As a systems researcher, I know tomorrow's innovation relies on today's theory. It is hard to think of an act with greater reputational damage. Myopic. Professor of Computer Science, University of Edinburgh

This is catastrophic for scientific research. FoCo researchers have a big impact on all areas of science. I'm shocked that a well respected institute like the U. of Leicester should have such a narrow-minded vision for the future.

I had a pleasure to meet Dr. Irek Ulidowski from Leicester University during my involvement in the COST action devoted to the reversible computing. It was for me a unique opportunity to meet people working on the foundations of computer science. Dr. Ulidowski ability to connect researchers with various experience is a great asset for any research group. From my perspective, actives of Leicester are especially relevant for the quantum computing community. Cutting funds on the research related to this field is hard to understand, especially taking into account the amount of fascinating topics arising from the connection of computer science and quantum physics. This is a very short-sighted proposal and I urge the University to reconsider. Researchers at Leicester have played and continue to play leading roles in many aspects of foundations of computer science (including in reversible computing, one of my interests) and there have been many examples of foundational research leading to real-world applications.

There is currently a ferment in the physics community, as computational ideas are recognized as fundamental (black hole entropy, the holographic principle, it from qubit, etc.) and the physical limits and possibilities of computation are exposed (quantum computing, quantum speed limits, reversible computing, etc.). These are true frontiers of science, upon which future breakthroughs and industries will be based. Universities are the womb from which these ideas are born.

At the University of Copenhagen, a former dean of Science tried to merge the departments of Mathematics and Computer Science. Massive protests from both departments and from external interest groups stopped this, so it definitely helps to speak up.

Cutting research in foundations of computer science is extremely short-sighted.

As an applied computer scientist and founder of a startup, I would be leery of hiring from a program with such a narrow view of the discipline.
