This is very poor judgement. Is the management aware that a University without theoretical computing and pure maths begins to loose its credibility as a "serious" research University?

Being a computing graduate and the alumni of Leicester University. I would strongly oppose such actions of the Senior Management. Computing and Mathematics are fundamental aspects in the world of IT be it Software Engineering, AI, or any other computer related field. I would request the authority to reconsider their stand over this issue and find a solution to this problem ASAP.

To steer and regulate the research directions of a faculty is not a good idea. Science is pluralistic. The better way is to hire excellent people and to let them deveop in their personal reseaech and cooperation with colleagues.

This is an incredibly short sighted initiative. In the last five years I lectured data science courses to both computer science and mathematics students. The foundational background that some of them have is instrumental for a deep understanding of this area and for allowing the future professionals to make innovative contributions to the field. Data science and machine learning can and must build on high quality mathematics and theoretical computer science content/programs.
