Theory of computing has long been the source for new emerging fields, among them machine learning which is the basis for all AI today. The constant of theory of computing is that it has spearheaded new research fields ftom day one of computer science and continues to do so.
Universities who want to be relevant in computer science in the future must have foundations of theory of computer science.

As a member of Science council of Japan, I declare that CS Theory and Mathematics are major vital sources of IT technologies. Google stated from a work of students supervised by a professor in CS theory (R. Motwani, Goedel award winner), and current AI could have never appeared without theoretical study on algorithms and learnability. There is no future of CS department without CS theory.

This is wrong on many levels and short-sighted: top AI conferences like AAMAS, AAAI, IJCAI, NEURIPS are all accepting theoretical computer science papers. AI needs theoretical computer science.

This is a staggeringly stupid move. There is a lot more to the foundations of Computing then just AI and data science. In fact, foundations in computer science have been the basis for much of the information revolution, and killing it off now will only guarantee your university's irrelevance in contributing to technology developments of the future.

I have been teaching AI since 20 years. It is obvious to all, also the managers of the University of Leicester, that AI is nowadays extremely important. It is perhaps less obvious that AI would not exists many people who have been working in foundations of computer science, starting, of course, from A.M. Turing. This is the usual situation of those who cannot see the forest for the trees.
