Today's advances in genomics and human health sit on top of ongoing foundational research in computer science from recent decades. Denying your students the opportunity to contribute in this and other impacted areas is misguided to say the least.

I believe that research that is "highly theoretical and not directly linked with applications" is expected, fundamental and particularly desirable at any university. In my opinion, the role of research at universities should explicitly not be dictated by what is currently deemed to be the most relevant by/for industry. From the educational side, if I was a prospective student, choosing a university which does not provide an environment for me to develop strong theoretical understanding would be out of the question.
