It is unfortunate to see this happening anywhere. Newton said, we stand on giant’s shoulders and I strongly believe FOCO is what provides a standing ground to any AI,ML or DL techniques. I hope responsible people will make a responsible decision.

Without foundations there is neither computer science nor a need for computer studies. My work is in non-theoretical aspects of computers but theory frequently has an strong influence on my research.

I am appalled with the notion that because one focuses on hard issues, one cannot contribute to softer and more applied issues. There is a reason for the word "foundation" in "foundation of computer science".

As a researcher working at the intersection of theory and practice in bioinformatics and oceans I want to stress that my work would not be possible without the strong theoretical foundation laid by research in pure algorithms theory. Computer Science is a young field and it is not difficult to directly link all current "applications" to basic theory developed over the past 10, 20 and 50 years. Neural networks were a theoretical curiosity not so long ago and this kind of short-sighted removal of basic research would ensure that the next breakthrough never occurs.
